The Digital world: Exaggeration and fantasy, more real than the reality

“When people arrive at Villa Heike, our facade sculpture will greet them. It might look like a monstrous creature which they may have never encountered in their life, but, what is it? From time to time, when we face the ugliest moments, I laugh and try to get over it. The sculpture is the laugh. Please come inside and get involved in this black comedy of digital media.”

● Colour mining/Receipt of privilege

“ Since 2016, I have been collecting news and accident images from digital media and collecting colours from it. It was to show the gap between reality and the fragmented images of digital media. I fragmentise it to a very small visual element which is colour. The colour chips and poetic names of the colours from the disaster itself work as data to serve our conscience-the accompanying work ‘Receipt of privilege’. By pushing a button, you will get a receipt of privilege, which contains a random poem, that relates to the news and accident images. The whole work is about the digitalised news and accident data and the way we use it.”

●Panorama painting/Irradiated rock

“The journey of this panorama painting started in 2016, the time when I had just come back from London to Seoul. I was supposed to exhibit at a gallery in west London at the end of the year, and they had a main exhibition space and also a small dedicated room to show. I was very excited to plan to cover all the 11-metre walls of the small room with my disaster painting. Since then till 2019, it has been growing, and now the painting is 25 metre. The elements from the painting have now become sculptures to burst out from the flatness. ”

“This is a painting which looks like a portal to another space. Using ‘Hanji’ is to show the layers of time. The thickness and its absorption stores my time. In the digital space, the things that only linger is a space, an empty space. What does time mean in digital space? And what is time? - time is for disappearing. We try so hard to hold onto the time we love, but it disappears and is covered up with something else. However, the digital traces and stores everything so vividly, my sentimental childhood captured in time and never changing, as vivid and striking as it was 30 years ago..”
