Piłsudskiego 74, 312C, Wrocław, Poland (Eng.) In May 2022, I started to do a drawing diary. In the beginning was to record the feelings that are scattered and vaporised while making panels, stretching papers, and glueing the surface to prepare the work. This is my endeavour to quickly and fully unravel and archive the sensations and emotions I feel daily. Before it all evaporates. Every time a drama of all kinds of colours and shapes unfolds in my mind, my body has limitations to convert this into a 'full-scale' painting each time. Since you can immediately record the colour and shape of emotions and feelings with just paper and coloured pencils, this project has helped me a lot in resolving my anxiety about the fleeting sensations, emotions and memories that passed through my mind. As I continued to draw this diary, I became able to easily visualise and extract my heart and thoughts. During the process, I could also affirm my 35-year-old abyss. It feels like things that are not organised in my heart and head are finding their place one after another. It is like all the good, lovely, slanderous, mediocre, heavy, and bad feelings that were entangled in the depths of my heart can be confirmed and hopefully be completely mine again. Beyond the context of recording emotions and memories, which is the goal of the drawing itself, this project is also a small fight to introduce and take care of my identity as a Korean woman living in Europe and the ordinariness and depth of the lives of all strangers around us. Last January, I held an exhibition in Berlin about 'Obersee', a lakeside I live, and the senses and memories that the place aroused in me through 'The sculptural painting', utilising the spatial characteristics of 'Villa Heike', a historic landmark in East Berlin. It was an exhibition considered to be the mother of or co-existing with this ‘@project.dear.diary' project. At the beginning of the month-long exhibition, I saw some familiar neighbours. Still, as the exhibition moved on to the second half, more and more neighbours came to visit. I've lived in many cities, but during my 4 years of staying here, I already knew that Berlin is neither international nor friendly compared to other cities. Since I lived on the outskirts, mostly with Germans, rather than downtown, the way people in that neighbourhood treated me was always very hysterical or cold for no reason. Through the corona pandemic, this discomfort has become worse. Curiously, these unexpected visits revealed a new aspect of my work. After this exhibition, I was accepted into the neighbourhood for the first time. Was this due to a great sense of satisfaction and pride when they came to the show or was it due to a shared landscape we sensed and remembered? Rather than being an easy-going outlander who has to be attacked or avoided when I meet them on the street, I have become a resident of the neighbourhood who can be greeted, asked how I am, or invited into their homes. After this series of experiences, I had a sense of mission. For reference, I have never felt or tried to have such a big and great feeling like this 'sense of mission' before. As people and capital gather in the desolate Berlin, the outskirts are also in the midst of change. Compared to just four years ago, the only people who looked like strangers were me, a Korean, and my British husband. Still, now there are so many that I often run into them on the street. I considered that recording and introducing my experienced senses and memories and promoting the change might not be only for the sake of myself and my family. I am grateful for being able to confirm and reassure the obvious fact that each of us, who can be recklessly othered and objectified, is multi-dimensional with a depth of life. I have left Obersee. A month ago, I moved to Mitte. My family and I are having a moment of care, repair and healing, but my studio remains in the neighbourhood. I am continuing my little war on the front lines. Thankfully, some people in the neighbourhood still visit me when I open my studio or hold an exhibition and enjoy these drawing works. Cho Juheon 2.1.2022 Berlin -------------------------------------------------- (한국어) 2022년 5월부터 나는 그림일기를 그리기 시작했다. 드로잉의 시작은 매일 느끼는 이 감각과 감정들을 온전히 작업으로 풀어내려는 노력 중, 정작 이걸 준비하는 과정에 판넬을 짜면서, 종이를 바르면서, 아교칠을 하면서 흩어져버리고 기체화 되어버리는 느낌들을 좀 빨리 기록해 놓기 위해서였다. 내 마음엔 매번 온갖 색과 모양의 드라마가 펼쳐지는데 내 몸은 이걸 다 커다란 ‘본격적인’ 작업으로 풀어내기엔 역부족이다. 종이와 색연필만 있으면 바로바로 감정과 느낌들의 색과 모양을 기록해 놓을 수 있기 때문에 이 프로젝트는 내 마음을 스쳐지나간 그 찰나의 느낌, 감정과 기억들이 사라져버리는 것에 대한 불안감을 해결하는데에 크게 도움을 줬다. 게다가 내 마음을 눈으로 매 번 확인하다보니 정확한 이유를 알 순 없지만 가슴이랑 머리속에 정리 안된 것들이 차곡차곡 제 자리를 찾는 느낌이었다. 마음 저 깊숙이 치적치적 꼬여있던 모든 좋고 중상이고 중간이고 중하이고 나쁜 느낌들이 내 눈으로 확인 되고 다시 온전히 내 것이 되는 기분이라고 설명하면 맞을까? 드로잉 작품 자체의 목표인 감정과 기억을 기록한다는 맥락을 넘어 이 프로젝트는 유럽에 살고있는 한국 여자라는 나의 정체성과&nbsp; 우리 주변 모든 이방인들의 삶의 평범함과 깊이를 소개하고 보살피기위한 작은 싸움이기도 하다. 지난 1월에 나는 베를린에서 내가 살고있는 곳인 Obersee와 그 장소가 나에게 일으킨 감각과 기억들을 ‘입체적 회화'로 동베를린의 역사적인 명소 ‘Villa Heike’ 의 장소적인 특성을 활용해 실현시키는 전시를 했다 - 이 ‘@project.dear.diary’ 프로젝트와 맥을 함께하거나 혹은 모체로 여겨지는 전시였다. 이 한달동안 이어졌던 전시의 초반에는 몇몇 낯이 익은 이웃들도 보였는데 전시가 중 후반으로 넘어가면서 거의 모든 동네사람들이 찾아왔다. 나는 여러 도시에서 살았었지만 다른 도시들에 비교하면 베를린이라는 곳이 그닥 인터네셔널 하지도 친절하지도 않은 곳이라는걸 이 곳에서 4년동안 살면서 이미 알고있었다. 게다가 나는 다운타운이 아니라 거의 독일인들만 거주하는 외곽에 살았었기 때문에 그 동네 사람들이 나를 대하는 방식은 늘 이유 없이 굉장히 날카롭거나 차가웠다. 코로나 팬데믹 시기를 거치면서 이 불편함은 더 심해지기도 했다. 희한하게도 이 예기치 않은 방문들은 내 작업의 새로운 면모가 드러나게했다. 전시에 찾아와 자신이 사는 곳을 소재로 한 작업들을 보며 대단한 만족감과 자부심을 느꼈는지 아니면 내가 감각하고 기억한 Obersee 풍경이 본인들이 느꼈던 그것과 비슷함에 통함을 느꼈는지 나는 이 전시 이후로 비로소 동네에 받아들여졌다. 나는 그렇게 느꼈다. 길에서 마주치면 인상을 쓰며 피하거나 해코지를 해야하는 이방인이라기 보다 인사를 하고 안부를 묻거나 자신의 집에 초대를 할 수 있는 동네 주민이 된 것이다. 이런 일련의 경험 이후로 나는 일종의 사명감을 가지게 되었다. 참고로 이 ‘사명감’과 같은 크고 위대한 감정은 일전에 느껴본적도 가져보려 한적도 없지만 말이다. 황량했던 베를린에 사람과 자본이 모이면서 외곽인 이곳도 변화가 한창이다. 불과 4년전과 비교하더라도 이전에는 이방인처럼 보이는 사람은 한국인인 나와 영국인인 남편 밖에 없없는데 이젠 종종 길에서 마주칠만큼 많아졌다. 이런 상황 속에서 나의 감정과 기억들을 기록하고 소개해 이 곳의 변화를 도모한다는 것이 오직 나와 나의 가족의 안위를 위하는 것 만은 아닐 수 있다는 생각을 했다. 무작정 타자화 되고 대상화 될 수 있는 우리 한명 한명에 입체감과 깊이가 있다는 당연한 사실을 확인시키고 안심시켜줄 수 있다는 것에 감사하게 생각한다. 나는 얼마 전 Obersee를 떠났다. 한달 전 부터 나는 Mitte에 이사와서 살면서 나와 나의 가족을 보살피고 치유하고 있지만 내 작업실은 아직 그 동네에 남아있다. 최전방에서 나의 작은 전쟁을 Memories; Obersee, Juheon Cho’s latest practice, is an exploration of the memories of places, peoples and events that have been left behind. The feeling of leaving places behind as we move from city to city, country to country is shared amongst an entire generation where moving has become the norm. As the future marches ever onwards we have memories of these places and an ever-expanding repository of memories that we place online and we are left with a sense of loss looking back on them. We may be able to recall memories from a long time ago, but they are incomplete and lack richness. When our social media shocks us with a memory of a long-ago visited place or time we are struck with a moment of joy as we relive the moment, which quickly fades away once we realise it is a ghost from the past, the exhausted ("L'Epuise) version of peoples and places that have been used up that we can’t go back to. We look at them fondly but they are flat, shallow versions of a different reality that doesn’t exist anymore. The artist Juheon Cho is trying to bring her own sensations and experienced histories with the memories of Villa Heike and Berlin back to our reality. The memory of drawing coral reefs in her childhood at her father's boring laboratory, her Berlin home next to Obersee that has a beautiful scenery that changes every day and Berlin’s memories that are buried in the Villa Heike are continuously carried back with her sculptural painting. She says it was an experience of living the life of ‘Dr. Frankenstein’ that gives skin to the ghost of a memory, the production of the work as a body without organs. Her work is rooted in traditional Korean painting styles and practices. She wishes to invite you to see the traditional ‘Korean deep colour painting (진채화)’ and the ‘Ideological Landscape (관념산수)’ within the form of sculptural painting. The place I dwell and the things left behind.We move towards the future, but what makes who I am today is made up of memories from the past and the sensations that are left behind. From a young age I have been moving frequently around with my family. As a consequence, I have left a lot of things behind, and the senses and memories I have are an irreversible experience that created a huge void filled with longing. We cannot bring it back, we cannot go back and cannot see the world with my younger eye; this kind of sadness is deeply placed in our mind, generating emptiness. These feelings and appreciations can be shared by fellow millennials who were born when transportation became more convenient and observe the illusion that the world is getting closer to each other, due to the development of the Internet. The smell of my father’s research laboratory, the smell of the chemicals and books, the softness of the brown wounded leather sofa, and the memory of my fathers posture when getting the green tea out for me from his pale green cabinet. The memory of drawing coral reefs at my father's boring laboratory. Inside of my mother’s studio which always tickled my nose due to the fluff from the wool of her textiles. Listening to the Beatles and music by Yang Hee Eun whilst travelling through the snow covered Misiryeong and Hangyeryeong Pass. Baby Uki’s damp and talc-like smell as he was held by my Grandma. The fresh air when Uki and I jumped around near the river in front of a cabin in Oslo as the sun dazzled on the water. The memory of skipping rope in front of my father as he was cutting the grass in a house in Newcastle. The smell of trees that wrapped me around as I came out of Laurie Grove Bath studio on my way home at sunset. The sounds and the colours that surrounded me on New Cross Street. The noisy pub where I first met Warren and the loud chattering of people inside. The winter was viciously cold in London that year. The scenery of early morning at Hayang Station after the blue dawn when I left the house in Apgujeong to catch the train to cross the country. The smell of the taxi to Daegu University. Watching the Muncheonji reservoir in a taxi with a fellow lecturer and the sight of the air shimmering above the water. The bench near the music department of Kyungpook National University reminded me of the steep path on the way to Ewha University’s art building that smelled of fallen magnolias that carpeted the floor. The smell of the grass and the gentle cool breeze that flowed through my hair at Champ de mars in Paris when we listened to our song Eric Clapton’s Layla. The chattering sound of children at Dogok Elementary School when I opened the window after working through the night until the next morning in the Daechi studio. The foggy cool morning air.Although several decades have passed, the experiences and places that I remember with my senses are clear to me; but they become transcendent entities without a clear trace, and even if I want to grab them, it’s not possible to. The justification for their existence is solely for the longing memories, and the fact that I am alive and breathing. 2. Experience and senses - Obersee and the Internet. The physical existence of Obersee and the virtual realm of the Internet both have special places in my heart. Shortly after moving to Berlin from Seoul, the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the globe and during a long one and a half years; we spent most of our time in Obersee and the Internet. We live on the shores of a small lake in Berlin called Obersee. The lake is impressive for its sensory experiences that offer me with different colours, smells, and swaying movement of each day; all of this makes me feel the change of seasons and that time is passing slowly. The warmth of the neighbours in Obersee made me forget about the less friendly atmosphere in the city and helped me forget that I am a foreigner. This place has given me many things, and Berlin to me is Obersee. I will leave Obersee one day, but no doubt I will long for my experiences here.&nbsp; Sometimes images from five or ten years ago pop up on social media and make me face experiential places from the past or peek through someone’s experience or stories; they look like ghosts that are exhausted (L'Epuise) and only have the shadows remain. As these images flash by I am filled with a momentary joy, soon followed by unbearable emptiness and loneliness that is deeper than before. Why am I trying to seek something meaningful from the Internet where time doesn't exist? The senses of the past get blurry everyday, the existence of the floating shadow of the Internet, and the large empty space between them is the starting point of my anxiety and I would like to throw a big question mark towards the reality of digital and Internet experiences.&nbsp; 3. The Reality and Virtuality - The discontinuity of time built out of experienced moments. We confirm reality with our senses and make it exist before us. The reality after that experience is of something that it is far away and high up, out of the reach. Hard reality becomes a transcendent being through the intervention of our perception and consciousness, and it is exalted to a more infinite and richer existence than the reality. By our perception and experience, this reality is transformed into a multi-layered structure beyond the experience and becomes a fluid and liberal being. As time passes along with the selfless qualitative continuation of consciousness, only the 'ideal' is faintly engraved on the solid frame of reality through the strong yet delicate impression. The fading of this sensual experience, which was clearly anchored somewhere, is a process that proves the experiential existence gradually becomes a being of transcendence as time passes. On the other hand, the images which are transferred to the internet contain many potentials, but they have a shabby quality that does not always necessarily lead to a true reality, they are mostly just flashes of light. The lines, dots and colours that images and experiences point to, cannot be turned into a real form. The visual forms that exist in the digital space, have eternal potential but they do not have richness, they are purely potential, and those forms are pushed to us through our senses and we are trained to allow them and have them drift, float and wander in us. The reason that the authority of these unreal and uninterrupted potentials is rushing to excess is because we are trainable beings.&nbsp; These forms on the Internet float as reflections of the real world, and we cannot control our mind. This is because, even if they linger inside, we adapt them at some incomprehensible level without us feeling them as a permanent and distinct threat. However, what I felt while living on the internet during the lockdown period is that the seeds of chaos have already been sown in abundance, and the anxiety that comes from them floating around in us makes us unable to stabilise ourselves. This insecurity made my senses and my existence small and insignificant. The body of work and the memories for the exhibition is generated from Obersee that have formed from the physical experience of being here as well as the combined experience of the internet. With places being posted on social media repeatedly I was able to examine the physical Obersee and the virtual Obersee, seeing the differences and similarities in my experiences and the experiences of other people. The resulting fragments of memory forcefully summon the multi-layered structure of the experiential sense into reality to be recalled and re-experienced. Obersee's water, grass, wind, sky, trees, light, darkness, sway, and the rustle of its leaves return through the process of transcendence from a clear and solid reality; disappearing in shape, leaving only color, back to front, flat and swollen, and moving with unnatural electricity. In the three-dimensional painting, the shadow ghosts float around in my memory and bring them all into the real world. It is like Dr. Frankenstein's monster, whose organs have already disappeared and only the body remains.Reality is a space where the moments of constant changes and movements are infinitely connected, and it is impossible to hold on to the moments because the physical reality goes through changes. The process itself of trying to bring back the infinite changes and transcendentally changing moments into our reality, is my work. Through the work, I tried to present an index of weighted thoughts and shapes that penetrate me and my entire memory. It’s still frustrating. Is an artwork just a snapshot of a memory and a thought? However, I hope that my snapshots can serve as an anchor for others’ thoughts. 4. The History of Villa Heike and Berlin, the things left behind. “Hohenschönhausen is one of those areas in Berlin that one rarely traverses these days. Aside from the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, a former State Security Political Prison there is a Villa Heike. An abandoned giant three-story Prussian Villa with the scars of east Berlin. The Prussian Villa Heike and the area surrounding it once belonged to the industrialist Richard Heike - a specialist in Canned-Goods Machinery Production. Heike built up a large industrial site consisting of a Machine Factory (specialising in meat and canned goods), a living and administrative building (the Villa Heike) and a factory storage. Heike lived on the top floor of Villa Heike with his large family, while the rest of the building was used for administrative purposes as well as functioning as a showroom for his machines. The Soviet Arrival and the liquidation of the Villa HeikeThe Soviet soldiers gunned him down on the street in front of the building and liquidated the rest of the building. The Soviets seized the whole area and created the “Speziallager Nr.3”. The camp was under jurisdiction of the&nbsp; People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) and served primarily as a collection and transit camp for over 16,000 men, women and young people. The Stasi and 11 Kilometers worth of Nazi FilesThe soviets handed over the area to the GDR in 1951, which continued to operate the facilities and prison. The area, which was also home to the “Operativ-Technische Sektor” – the unit which was responsible for developing all the technical gadgets any spy could need. The Villa Heike soon found itself being used for something even more secretive – it was to become the central storage and research facility of the Stasi for its secret nazi files. The Reunification and AbandonWith the German reunification, the files moved into the German Federal Archives. With the files moved, the Villa Heike was left abandoned. And that’s how it remained for almost 25 years – until a group of 6 Architects and Investors bought the building in 2015 and decided to renovate it.” ( Seebode, Georg. “Villa Heike.” Digital Cosmonaut, Cosmonaut, 2 Mar. 2018 (digitalcosmonaut.com/2018/villa-heike/))In this place where time seems to have stopped, I pondered a lot over the two years after seeing the exhibition space about what I could tell and what the story would mean to us and to the viewers of the exhibition. I thought it was necessary to dig through and think about Berlin's complexity and confusion, which moves through collapse, increased openness, dismantling, and creation through Villa Heike, and the traces left behind with careful consideration. What kind of memory has been left behind in this place whilst the place was running towards the future? What was in it’s past? When people think of Berlin and this Villa Hieke, they think of East Germany. But what memories were there, what did people want, and what traces remain in this space? After moving to Berlin in 2019, I heard for the first time about the history of Villa Heike building in the program of the Local Art Tour (Lange Nacht der Bilder 2019) held every September in Lichtenberg, where I live, and that I learned this building contained memories of all the modern history of Berlin. People on the tour, including my friend Christoph Duro, said the building was their favorite. It was the winter of that year that I first had an opportunity to look at the interior of the building, due to being offered the possibility of doing a solo exhibition&nbsp; here due to an introduction through Museum Lichtenberg im Stadthausdmf. Villa was such a beautiful and antique classical-style building that endured the pain of the Nazi regime, World War II, and division of the country due to the occupation, and seeing this building it made me understand why Berliners think of it as their favourite. In the Korean education system we usually learn about the English, France and Italian history but there was not much emphasis on the modern cultural times of Germany. Not knowing where this style of architecture came from or developed I decided to look into the history of modern Germany and more precisely, Berlin. Attila The Hun’s invasions and the Era of Barbarian migration. The Slavic settlement of Berlin.The Rise of the German Empire, the Holy Roman Empire and the Principality of Saxony. The Thirty Years` WarThe Rise of Berlin through Friedrich Wilhelm Der Große Kurfürst 17th Century18th Century Friedrich the 1st - The&nbsp; declaration of Berlin as the capital of the Prussian Kingdom. During this period, a lot of Baroque and Classical style architecture were constructed, and many of the 'Altbau' that remain in Berlin to this day may have been formalised under its influence.19th Century occupation by the French (Napoleon’s Army)1871 German Empire -&nbsp; Berlin became the German Empire’s capital. Expansionist Policy - South Africa and West Africa (Namibia), East Africa (Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi), Cameroon, Togo, the South Sea Islands, Northeastern New Guinea and the large and small islands ( Nasa Mark Islands), Samoa, and the Shandong Peninsula of China were colonized.The loss of World War 1 and the collapse of the German Empire. The Weimar Republic and the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) The End of the Weimar Republic and Rise of Adolf HitlerThe Nazi government of Germay and World War 2. The 1945-1990 Division of Germany (America, England, France and the Soviet Union / FRG and GDR) Looking back at the history of Berlin, the construction of Villa Heike started in 1910 and was completed in 1911. So this means that this building was made just before World War 1 and it endured and all the changing winds and blows that were subjected to East Berlin from that time. However, the affection for the building of the people who had been on the tour was not about the dark days, but about the beauty of the previous era in the building itself. Maybe to Eastern Berlin people the building causes them to remember the beautiful memory of the German or Prussian Empire that was hidden behind Villa Heike’s scarred history which I aim to restore. 5. The deep colour painting method and The Ideological landscape painting - Korean Painting. The root of my work will be traditional Korean painting. In more detail, it is a 관념산수 genre that is painted with 진채화 method. Most German people don’t know about Korean painting. I particularly emphasize it as an important element of my work.&nbsp; As there are various art trends and movements originating from Europe and Germany, various styles of painting have been developed in Korea from ancient times and the Three Kingdoms period through several centuries. Since the middle ages many cultural movements occurred amongst professional artists who were raised through the Kingdoms institute of artistic study called Dohwawon (during the Corea era of 918-1392). During the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), a great Korean artist originated from the Dohwaso (a follow on from the Dohwawon) as well as the development of many important cultural movements. In particular, the changes in the painting style of landscape paintings are clearly distinguished according to the movements of the times, and their historical importance is significant. These genres of landscape painting started with the depiction of natural scenery on to canvas, but during the early modern time, it gradually took root as a genre called 관념산수 (觀念 山水) or ideological landscape painting that depicts the landscape as it is viewed from the artist conscious and unconscious mind. In after the early modern period the genre of 관념산수(觀念 山水) has developed alongside korean history, depicting representations of the late, modern and still practiced in current times. The deep colour painting methodThe deep colour painting method (진채화법) is a traditional Korean colour painting method that I learned from teachers during my time at Art middle and high school I learned from contemporary Korean painters who have inherited the tradition. It is a method of adding several layers of paint until the colour develops clearly on the paper. The characteristic of this method is that it can create a matte surface without reflecting light no matter how many times the pigment is applied, and that it can create depth on the screen without expressing the contrast separately. Ideological landscape painting관념산수(觀念 山水);ideological landscape painting is considered as the way the human beings accept the senses from the outside of their body and was a natural way of transferring the process of the visual forms and memories from our mind to a painting. If surrealism is a trend that has turned its eyes to the deep and large realm of the unconscious hidden beneath the iceberg, then the 관념산수(觀念 山水) is based on ancient times, has gone through various cultural movements to the 10th century, and along with the flow of history. The style of the paintings always introduces us to the possibilities of the world behind the phenomena, dreams and helps us to think about the layers of consciousness. In many cases, The beginning and end of my work is in that it reconstructs the experiential reality and the things that have become transcendental beings after the sensory experience, and in that way images in different spaces or layers are expressed all at once on one canvas (similar to a collage), some link between the surrealism can be found, but the roots are not the same. 6. Finishing Word The splendor of the waves, the cold autumn wind interrupting the warm sunlight, and the smell of the swaying lawn; the ambiguous state of these things float around on our minds. The exhibition was born out of the hopefulness of the reality, and the narratives that enforce meaning in our lives. ( 한국어 ) 1. 내가 머무는 곳 그리고 우리 뒤에 남겨지는 것들 2. 경험의 세계 ; 오버시 그리고 인터넷3. 현실과 가상 ; 체험된 순간들로 구성된 불연속적인 시간4. 빌라하이크의 역사 그리고 남겨진 기억5. 진채화 그리고 관념산수 - 한국화 6. 끝내는 말 1. 내가 머무는 곳 그리고 우리 뒤에 남겨지는 것들 우리는 미래를 향해 앞으로 나아가지만 지금의 나를 만드는 것은 우리 뒤에 남겨두고 떠나버린 많은 기억들과 감각들이다. 어렸을 때 부터 현재까지 부모님을 따라 그리고 운명의 끌림을 따라 이 도시 저 도시 이 나라 저 나라 이사를 자주 했다. 덕분에 나는 내 뒤에 많은 것들을 남겨두었고, 이 돌이킬 수 없는 체험으로서의 감각과 기억들은 현재의 나에게 그리움이라는 벙 뚫린 큰 결핍으로 남았다. 다시 돌이킬 수 없다는 것, 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 곳이 많아진다는 것, 다시 돌아가 조금 더 어린 나의 눈으로 세상을 볼 수 없다는 것, 이런 상실의 슬픔이 참 마음속에 공허하게 자리잡는다. 이런 기분이나 감상은 교통기술의 발달로 이동이 편리해진 후, 그리고 인터넷의 발달로 하루가 다르게 세상이 서로 가까워지는 것 같지만 현실은 그 반대편으로 치달을 때에 태어나 이를 한껏 누리는 밀레니얼 세대가 공유할 수 있는 것이다. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; 아빠 연구실의 약품냄새, 책냄새, 퀘퀘한 갈색의 푹꺼진 쇼파의 부드러움, 연초록색 철로된 락카 안에서 현미녹차를 꺼내주던 아빠모습. 어린 나에게는 무료한 아빠 연구실에서 아빠가 준 흑백의 그림책을 보며 따라 그리던 해양식물들, 털실들 때문에 콧구멍이 간질간질했던 엄마의 작업실. 눈보라치던 미시령과 한계령을 넘으며 온가족이 듣던 비틀즈와 양희은 노래. 할미가 안고있는 갓난아기 영욱이의 쿰쿰한 살냄새. 한 여름 오슬로 한 캐빈 앞 찬란하게 해가 비치는 강가에서 영욱이와 뛰어 놀던 그 선선한 공기. 뉴캐슬 집 마당에서 잔디깎는 아빠 옆에서 그 풀냄새 맡으며 탁탁탁 줄넘기 하던 기억. 런던 골드스미스 대학의 로리글로브 바스 작업실에서 해가 뉘엇뉘엇 할 때 나와 집으로 향하던 나를 감싸줬던 그 가로수 냄새, 뉴크로스 길에서 만나는 친구들, 대화들, 나를 감싸던 색들. 워렌이랑 처음 만난 전시 뒤풀이 했던 시끄러운 펍, 사람들의 대화, 매서웠던 런던 그 겨울의 찬 공기. 푸른 새벽에 압구정집을 나와 기차를 타고 도착한 화양역의 풍경들, 택시냄새, 동료 선생님과 함께 택시 안에서 보는 대구대 앞 문천지의 멋진 아지랑이. 목련이 추적추적하게 떨어진 이대 예술동 가는 오르막길 냄새가 생각나게하던 경북대 음악동 근처 벤치. 파리 샴드마스에서 우리 모여 늘 들었던 에릭클랩튼의 레일라, 그 잔디냄새, 긴 머리카락에 감기는 선선한 바람. 대치동 작업실에서 다음날 아침까지 꼬박 작업하고 창문을 열었을 때 들려오는 도곡 초등학교 아이들의 재잘대는 소리. 안개 낀 서늘한 아침 공기. 몇 십년이 지나도 감각으로 기억하는 그 경험의 장소들은 나에게 실체가 분명한 곳이지만 흔적도 없는 상태로 초월적인 존재가 되어 희끗희끗 해지고 움켜잡고 싶어도 전혀 그럴 수 없지만 그 존재의 당위는 오롯이 그 체험을 향한 그리운 감각과 내가 숨쉬고 살아있다는 것으로부터 확인이 된다. 2. 경험의 세계 - 오버시 그리고 인터넷 현실의 오버시와 가상의 인터넷은 둘 다 나에게 특별한 곳이다. 서울에서 베를린으로 이사 온 후 코비드 19라는 전염병이 온세상에 퍼졌고 긴 록다운 기간동안 우리는 거의 1년 반을 오버시와 인터넷 안에서만 생활했다. 우리는 오버시라는 베를린의 한 작은 호숫가에 산다. 이 호수는 매일 다른 색과 냄새와 일렁임으로 나에게 감각적 체험을 통한 감동을 주고 계절이 변하고 시간이 나긋하게 지나가고 있음을 느끼게 해준다. 오버시 동네이웃들의 따뜻함은 베를린 사람들의 예의 없음과 불친절함을 잊어버릴 수 있게하고 내가 이방인임을 잊게 만들어주었다. 나는 이 곳에서 많은것을 받았다. 나에게 베를린은 오버시이다. 나는 오버시를 언젠간 떠날것이지만 이 곳에서의 체험은 또한 나에게 큰 그리움으로 남을것이 분명하다. 간혹 페이스북이나 인스타그램은 내 과거속의 체험적 장소들과 마주하게한다, 감각들이 소진 (L'Epuise)되고 그 그림자들만 초라하게 남아있는 10년전 5년전의 이미지들, 혹은 다른사람들의 경험의 흔적들은 마치 유령과 같다. 이것들이 훅! 하고 나를 통과하고 나면 눈이 번쩍 뜨이는 울컥 하는 감동과 함께 그 뒤에는 이전보다도 더 견딜 수 없는 공허함과 쓸쓸함이 밀려온다. 시간이 존재하지 않는 저 인터넷 속에서 나는 왜 그토록 무언가를 확인하려 하는건가. 내 안에서 매일매일 흐려지는 과거의 감각들과 부유하는 인터넷 속의 그림자의 존재, 그리고 그 사이의 커다란 빈 공간은 나에게 불안의 시발점이고 디지털과 인터넷 속 경험의 실재성을 향한 커다란 물음표이다. 그 불안함을 잠재우려면 그 유령이라도 이 곳에 데려다 놔야하는 건가. 3. 현실과 가상 - 체험된 순간들로 구성된 불연속적인 시간 우리는 감각으로 확인하며 실재를 우리 앞에 존재하게한다. 그리고 그 경험된 이후의 실재란 저어 멀리 높고 손에 잡히지도 닿지도 않는 것 이었다. 견고한 현실(hard reality)은 우리의 지각과 의식의 개입으로서 초월적인 존재가 되고 이는 현실보다 더 무한하고 더 풍부한 존재로 고양(高揚)된다. 우리가 지각하고 경험함으로써 이 현실은 경험을 넘어 혹은 그 아래로 깊이 다층적인 구조로 전환되고 유동적이고 개방적인 존재가 된다. 확고한 현실속의 테두리와 강렬하고 섬세한 인상은 시간이 흐르고 의식의 자기없는 질적 지속이 계속 되면서 그 ‘이상’만 희미하게 각인된다. 분명히 어딘가에 닻을 내렸던 이 감각적 경험이 희미 해져 간다는것은 알량한 시간이 지나면서 이 경험적 존재가 점점 초월의 존재가 되어감을 증명해주는 과정이다. 반면 가상의 인터넷과 디지털로 옮겨져버린 이미지들은 어떠한 잠재성만을 보유하지만 그것이 반드시 실재성으로 귀결되지는 못하는 초라한 특성을 가진다. 인터넷 속 이미지와 경험들이 가르키는(선정하는) 선과 점과 색들은 형이 되지 못한다. 무한한 가능성을 가진 동시에 풍부하지는 못한 디지털 속의 형의 존재는 순전히 잠재적이며 그 잠재적인 형상들을 우리는 감각으로부터 이어와서 내 안에서도 부유하도록 쉽게 허락하는 훈련을 받아왔다. 이런 비현실적이고 중단없는 잠재적인 것들의 권위가 과잉으로 치닫는 이유는 우리가 훈련가능한 몸을 지닌 존재이기에 이 인터넷 속 형상(form, 形相) 들이 상징세계 속에서 떠다니고, 내가 제어 할 수 없이 우리의 의식 속에서 맴돌아도 영원한고도 뚜렷한 위협으로 느끼지 못한 채 어떠한 이해하기 힘든 층위에서 적응하게 되기 때문이다. 하지만&nbsp; 락다운 기간동안 인터넷 속에서 생활하면서 느낀 확실한건 이미 혼돈의 씨앗은 에진작에 흐드러지게 뿌려졌고 그것들이 부유하는데에서 오는 불안함은 우리를 안정할 수 없게 한다는 것이다. 이 불안함은 내 감각과 존재를 초라하게 만들었다. 이번 작업은 그리고 기억은 오버시에서 생성된다. 이 오버시의 기억이란 물리적인 경험과 인터넷 안에서의 경험이 결합된 곳이다. 많은 사람들이 놀러오는 이 장소는 소셜미디어에 반복적으로 개시되었기 때문에 나의 경험적 오버시와 가상의 오버시를 통해 나와 다른 사람들의 경험에서 보여지는 차이점이나 유사점을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 그리고 결과물인 이 기억의 조각들은 그 경험적 감각의 다층적 구조를 현실속으로 강제 소환해 재경험하게 한다. 뚜렷하고 견고한 현실로부터 의식의 개입으로 초월의 과정을 거치며 돌아온 오버시의 물, 풀, 바람, 하늘, 나무, 빛, 어둠, 일렁임, 부나낌은 패턴화 되기도하고 흐려지기도 하고, 형체는 사라지고 색채(色)만이 남기도 하고, 앞.뒤.위.아래가 바뀌기도하고, 납작해지고 부풀기도 하고, 괴물처럼 전기로 움직이기도 한다. 기억속 두둥실 떠다니는 그림자 유령들을 바라보고 저것들을 모조리 내가 사는 세상으로 데리고 온 이 입체적 회화는 이미 기관들은 모두 사라져버리고 껍데기의 몸만 남아 돌아온 프랑켄슈타인 박사의 괴물과 같다. 현실은 끊임 없는 변화와 운동의 순간순간들이 무한하게 이어진 공간이고 이는 견고한 현실이 거치는 변화의 연속 이라서 이 순간을 잡아 놓는 것은 있을 수 없는 일. 견고한 현실의 무한한 변화와 그리고 초월적으로 변해가는 순간을 다시 견고한 현실로 데리고 오기위해 노력하는 과정 그 자체가 나의 작업이다. 나는 이 작업을 통해 나와 기억 전체를 관통하는 사유의 지표와 입체적 형상을 제시하려 했다. 하지만 여전히 답답하다. 예술작업이란 기억과 사유의 스냅사진에 불과한 것일까? 단, 이 스냅사진이 또 다른 사유의 닻이 될 수 있길 바래 보긴 한다. &nbsp; 4. 빌라하이크의 역사 그리고 남겨진 기억 “분단 이전베를린 호헨젠하우젠 기념관 옆에는 소비에트 시절 정치범들을 가두고 심문했던 슈타지 교도소 박물관과 동독의 역사와 흉터가 그대로 남아있는 거대한 4층짜리 프로이센 스타일의 건축물 빌라하이케가 있다. 이 프로이센 스타일의 빌라와 그 주변지역은 한 때 동베를린의 최고의 거부이자 통조림 제품과 그 기계를 생산하는 기업인 리차드 하이케의 소유지였다. 하이케는 이 호헨젠하우젠의 넓은 부지에 육류와 통조림제품을 생산하는 대규모 공장과 노동자들의 생활 및 관리 건물 그리고 창고로 구성된 대규모 산업 부지를 건설했다. 하이케는 빌라 하이케의 꼭대기층에서 그의 대가족과 함께 살았고 건물의 나머지 공간은 본인의 기계들을 전시하는 곳과 공장들을 관리하는 곳으로 사용되었다. 소련의 점령 (제 1기 분단정부)2차 세계대전 이후 동베를린을 소련이 점령하고 소련군은 이 리차드 하이케를 빌라 앞에서 총살하고 건물을 갈취했다. 소련은 이 전체 지역을 점령했고 이 구역을 “Speziallager Nr.3 (제3 특별구역)”으로 지정했다. 이 지역에는 내무인민위원회 (NKVD) 소속의&nbsp; 정치범 강제노동수용소가 만들어졌고 주로 16000명 이상의 남성, 여성과 청소년들이 수용되어 불결한 횐경에서 노동력을 착취당했다. 동독정부 (GDR) 체제 (제 2기 분단정부)소련(제1기 분단 정부)은 1951년 이 지역을 동독(제 2기 분단 정부)에게 넘겼고 동독정부(GDR)는 이 지역과 시설들을 국가보안부와 감옥으로 사용하였다. 국가보안부 (속칭 ‘슈타지' Stasi)의 역할은 스파이를 육성하고 그들이 필요로하는 모든 기술장비를 개발하는 책임을 맡은 부서이다. 훗날 현재의 독일연방정부는 빌라 하이크 건물이 더욱 비밀스러운 일에 사용되었다는 것을 알게되었는데 나치 정부의 비밀 도청파일들과 당시 동독에 살던 많은 핵심 인물들의 기밀 정보 뿐만아니라 일반 시민들을 도청한 기록, 동독 시절 첨단 무기들의 청사진, 주변국가들을 도청한 기록들이 남아있었다고한다. 통일 이후 동독과 서독의 통일 이후 이 모든 파일들은 독일연방 기록 보관소로 옮겨졌다. 그리고 그 이후로 25년동안 차갑고 무서웠던 시절을 최대한 잊고 싶어 하는 동베를린 사람들의 바람 때문인지 빌라하이케와 이 지역 일대는 2015년까지 철저히 버려졌다가 베를린시, 리히텐버그 문화재청, 동독의 젊은 건축가들에 의해 재정비 되었고 지금은 작가들의 작업실과 미술관으로 사용되고있다. 그리고 베를린시의 주요 문화재로 지정됐다.” (참조; Seebode, Georg. “Villa Heike.” Digital Cosmonaut, Cosmonaut, 2 Mar. 2018 (digitalcosmonaut.com/2018/villa-heike/))시간이 멈춰버린 것 같은 이 곳에서 나는 어떤 이야기를 할 수 있을지 그리고 그 이야기가 우리에게, 전시를 보는 사람들에게 어떤 의미가 있을지 이 전시장 공간을 본 후 2년의 기간동안 많은 고민을 했다. 빌라하이크를 통해 몰락과 개방, 해체와 생성을 거치며 정신없이 움직이는 베를린의 복잡함과 혼돈을 좀 더 긴 호흡으로 이 곳에 살아오고있는 사람들과 남겨진 흔적들의 입장에 서서 분석하고 사유해 볼 필요가 있다 생각했다. 이 곳은 무엇을 남겨두고 미래를 향해왔던것일까. 이 뒤에는 무엇이 있던것일까. 사람들은 베를린과 이 빌라하이크를 떠올리며 구동독을 떠올린다. 하지만 그 뒤에는 어떤 기억들이 있었으며 사람들을 무엇을 원했고 어떤 흔적들이 이 공간에 남아있는 것일까? 2019년 베를린으로 이사한 후 내가 살고있는 Lichtenberg에서 매년 9월에 개최하는 동네 예술공간 투어 (Lange Nacht der Bilder 2019) 프로그램에서 빌라하이크 건물의 역사에대해 처음으로 들었고 베를린의 근대 (Modern times)는 이 건물을 관통하고 있다는 설명을 들었다. 내 친구 크리스토프 듀로를 포함한 같이 투어를 하던 사람들은 이 건물이 자신의 페이보릿 이라고들 말했다. 건물 내부공간에 들어가 자세히 들여다본 것은 Museum Lichtenberg im Stadthausdmf 을 통해 이 공간에서의 개인전 가능성을 제안 받은 후인 그 해 겨울이었다. 나치정권 시기, 제 2차 세계대전,&nbsp; 분단의 아픔을 견뎌낸 건물이라고 보기에 빌라는 너무 아름답고 고풍스러운 고전주의 양식의 건축물이었고 왜 베를린 사람들이 이 건물을 좋아하는지 이해할 수 있을것도 같았다. 하지만 한국 교육시스템에서는 보통 영국이나 프랑스, 이탈리아의 역사와는 달리 독일의 근세나 근대에 대해서 유의미한 문화적 강조를 하지 않아 나는 베를린의 이런 고전주의 장식과 형식의 건축물이 어디에서 어떠한 역사를 통해 들어와 자리 매김 한 건지 알지 못했고 나는 독일 그리고 더 정확히는 베를린의 역사에대해 좀 살펴보기로 했다.&nbsp; 375년 아틸라의 훈족 대이동과 게르만족의 대이동 슬라브족 정착10세기-12세기 : 독일왕국, 신성로마제국, 작센공국근세 - 30년 전쟁프리드리히 빌헬름 대(大)재 (Friedrich Wilhelm Der Große Kurfürst)&nbsp; - 상.공업. 문화가 급속도로 발전한 신흥도시 베를린 18세기 프리드리히 1세 (Friedrich I) - 프로이센 왕국을 선포하고 베를린은 이 때부터 프로이센 왕국의 수도로서 자리매김했다.19세기 나폴레옹의 프랑스군에 의해 점령1871년 프로이센 왕국을 주축으로 한 독일 제국이 세워지면서 비로소 베를린은 독일 제국의 수도가 되었다.&nbsp; 이 시기에 바로크와 고전주의 양식의 건축양식과 도시경관이 만들어졌고 베를린에 현재까지 남아있는 많은 ‘Altbau’들은 이 시기에 만들어졌거나 그 영향아래 형식화 되었겠다. 이 시기에 만들어진 건축물을 프로이센 스타일 건축물이라고 하고 빌라하이케도 포함된다.팽창주의 정책 - 남아프리카와 서아프리카(나미비아), 동아프리카(탄자니아·르완다·부룬디), 카메룬, 토고, 남양 군도, 뉴기니 북동부 및 부근의 크고 작은 섬들(나사 마크 제도), 사모아, 중국의 산둥 반도 등을 식민화 했다.1918년 제 1차 세계대전의 패전으로 독일 제국 (Deutsches Kaiserreich)은 무너짐베르사유의 조약 -&nbsp; 식민지를 영구 상실하게 되었고 막대한 군비 축소, 프랑스에 일부 지역을 반환바이마르 공화국 - 사회민주당 (SPD)나치정당과 제 2차 세계대전1945년 부터 1990년 (45년) 분단 1기: 미국, 영국, 프랑스 / 소련분단 2기: 서독 (FRG) / 동독 (GDR)1990년 - 통일 이렇게 역사를 되짚어보면 빌라하이크는 1910년에 시작해서 그 다음해인 1911년에 완공되었으니 제 1차 세계대전이 발발하기 직전에 지어졌고, 그 이후 동베를린이 겪은 모든 풍파를 가장 앞에서 다 감수 해야 했을 것이다. 하지만 투어를 함께했던 사람들의 건물에대한 애정은 그 어두웠던 시절에대한 이야기로 향하기 보다 건물 자체에서 풍기는 바로크 풍의 프로이센 건축의 아름다움에 대한 것이었다. 빌라하이케 건물은 동베를린 사람들이 보존하고 기억하고 싶어하는 프로이센이나 독일제국의 모습에대한 갈망 일 수 있을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 이것이 내가 다시 현실로 데려오고 싶은&nbsp; 빌라하이케의 으시시한 역사 뒤에 남겨졌던 혹은 가려져 있었던 그립고 아름다운 과거의 베를린에대한 기억일 것이다. 5. 진채화 그리고 관념산수 - 한국화 대부분의 나의 작업의 근간은 전통 한국화일 것이다. 더 자세히는 전통 진채화를 통해 실현한 관념산수일 것이다. 대부분의 독일사람들은 한국화를 모른다. 어떤 갤러리 관장에게서 ‘한국은 원래 미술이 없었는데 최근에 케이팝으로 장사를 잘 하고있는 것 같다’ 라는 이야기를 듣고 내가 바보가 되어야하는지 이 사람이 바보인건지 헷갈려서 잠시 멈칫 했던 적이 있다. 한국에서는 정규 교육 과정 속에서 한국, 중국, 동아시아, 중동, 유럽, 아프리카, 아메리카 등의 예술의 역사에대해 배우지만 독일 혹은 베를린에서는 다양한 문화의 예술에대해 가르치지는 않는 모양이다. 한국에서 전시를 했다면 미술인이 아닌 사람에게라도 특별히 이 설명을 하지 않아도 되었겠지만 이 곳에서는 이게 이제서야 중요한 담론거리가 될 수 있을거라 생각하고 작업노트의 한 꼭지로 특별히 강조한다. 유럽과 독일로부터 비롯된 여러 미술사조와 운동들이 있겠듯이 한국에서는 고대 그리고 삼국시대로부터 여러세기를 거쳐 다양한 화풍이 발달되어왔고 근세에는 절파와 종파를 근간으로 한 화법이 도화원(圖畫院) 이라는 기관을 기반으로 연구되어왔고 조선시대와 근대에는 도화서(圖畫署)를 중심으로 다수의 중요한 화원들이 배출되었고 다양한 화법들이 유행을 했다. 특히 산수화의 화풍 변화가 시대의 흐름에따라 분명하게 구분되어서 그 사료적 중요성도 상당하다. 물론 이 산수화 라는 장르는 자연경관을 그대로 화폭에 담는데에서 시작했으나 근세에 이르러서는 점차 화가의 머리속에 담겨있는 풍경을 그리는 관념산수(觀念 山水) 라는 장르로 뿌리를 내렸다. (이 이후로도 산수화 장르는 조선 중.후기, 근대, 현재 한국의 시대상황을 대변하며 변화했고 이 것에대한 자세한 설명은 생략한다)런던이나 베를린에서 만나는 사람들은 내 작업을 통해 초현실주의를 말하기도 하고 질들뢰즈, 가타리, 베르그손, 프루스트, 보드리야르를 이야기 하기도, 브리짓 라일리를 말하기도, Aram Bartholl 에대해 이야기를 하기도 한다. 나 또한 같은 현대를 살아가는 이 시대의 일원으로 그 사조나 작가들과의 접점이 매우 큰 관심사이기도 하고 영향을 받기도 했다. 하지만 내 작업의 근간을 물어본다면 초현실주의나 자연의 패턴화나 인터넷 시대, 시간과 공간에대한 유물론적인 고찰에대한 설명 이전에 전통 한국화의 진채화법이나 관념산수에대해 설명하고 싶다. 한국이나 동아시아사람들이 내 작업을 본다면 모두 이런 단어들을 떠올리겠지만 놀랍고 아쉽게도 아직 이 곳 유럽에서는 유럽기반의 예술 이외 70%를 차지하는 다른 세상의 예술의 존재나 그 역사가 굉장히 새로운 것일 수 있다. 진채화법이란 내가 중 고등학교 대학교때, 전통을 이어온 현대 한국화 작가들인 스승들에게서 배워온 한국 전통 채색화법인데 보통 닥나무로 만들어진 흡수력이 매우 높은 한지 위에 아교 포수를 해 코팅을 한 후 안료와 아교를 섞은 물감으로 색을 원하는 만큼 진하고 선명하게 발색 될때까지 여러겹 덧칠해서 올리는 방법이다. 이 방법의 큰 특성은 아무리 여러번 안료를 올려도 빛을 반사하지 않고 매트한 표면을 만들 수 있다는 것, 그리고 명암을 따로 표현하지 않아도 화면에 깊이를 만들 수 있다는 것이다. 20세기 초 입체주의와 다다이즘으로부터 이어진 초현실주의는 1차세계대전 이후 기존의 전통과 질서에 대한 파괴의 운동이었던 반면 한국화에서의 관념산수는 어떠한 형국에대한 저항과 비판이기보다 인간이 외부로부터의 감각을 받아들이고 사유하는 과정을 평면으로 옮겨오는 자연스러운 방식이었다. 초현실주의가 빙산에 아래에 가려져있는 깊고 커다란 무의식이라는 새로운 영역에 눈을 돌렸던 사조라고 한다면 한국화의 관념산수는 고대를 토대로 10세기 부터 여러 절파와 종파를 거치며 역사의 흐름과 함께 늘 우리에게 현상 이면의 세계의 가능성, 꿈과 무의식의 세계에대한 가능성을 소개하고 의식의 층위에대한 고민을 했던 흔적이라 하겠다. 초현실주의의 공간은 많은 경우, 상상이 현실이 되는 가능성의 공간이며 현실의 그림자이자 거울과 같은 비현실의 공간이다. 내 작업의 시작과 끝은 경험적인 실재와 그 감각적 경험 이후 초월적인 존재가 되어버린 것들을 재구성한다는 점, 그리고 서로 다른 공간이나 층위에 있던 이미지들을 한 화폭에 한꺼번에 표현한다는 점에서 (콜라주와 비슷하다) 둘사이의 어떠한 고리를 발견 할 수 있겠지만 그 역사적 뿌리가 같은 것은 결코 아니다. 6. 끝내는 말 그 물결의 찬란함과 따뜻한 햇빛에 부서지는 찬 가을 바람 일렁이는 잔디밭의 냄새 이런것들은 선명하지도 아예 아련하지도 않은 애매한 상태에서 우리 마음속에 어떤 층위에서 둥둥 떠다닌다. 이들을 향한 그리움에대한 공상 (空想: 현실적이지 못하거나 실현될 가망이 없는것을 막연히 그리어 봄. 또는 그런 생각)과&nbsp; 사의 (辭意;글이나 말로 이야기되는 뜻)가 이번 전시를 만들었다.이 전시가 있기위해 도움을 주신 임보라, Warren Heath, Museum Lichtenberg im Stadthausdmf 의 Almut Koch, Sirid Amsel,&nbsp; Chris McKinsey, Micha, Johan, Robert Kim, Christof Düro 그리고 서울에 있는 내 가족에게 감사한 마음을 전하고싶다. Your use of our Website and Services does not grant you any ownership rights to our Content. https://jo-joo.com/Art-critic-Bora-Lim Thu, 30 Dec 2021 22:01:48 +0000 jo-joo.com https://jo-joo.com/Art-critic-Bora-Lim &nbsp; 사유를 놓고 기억을 감각하기 표제어 : 한국화, 한지, 진채화, 베를린, 시간, 기억, 감각 사유를놓고 기억을 감각하기: 베를린 활동 한국화 작가 조주현 개인전 &lt;“기억 ; 오버제“&gt;에 대하여 1. 빌라 하이케의 &lt;”기억 ; 오버제”(„Memories ; Obersee“)&gt; 동베를린 리히텐베르크(Lichtenberg)에 위치한 빌라 하이케(Villa Heike)에서 조주현 작가가 “기억 ; 오버제”(„Memories ; Obersee“)라는 제목으로 개인전을 열었다. 빌라 하이케는 동독의 ‘국가 보안부’라 불리던 슈타지 옆에 위치해 있으며, 독일 분단 시절 동독 정부에서 감시하던 사람들의 모든 개인 정보를 서류로 보관하던 건물이다. 작가는 동독의 정부기관이 모여 있던, 동베를린의 과거를 고스란히 읽을 수 있는 리히텐베르크에 거주하며 작업을 이어가고 있다. 이번 전시는 개인의 삶과 작업이 이루어지는 공간에서 벗어나지 않으며, 개인의 역사와 도시의 역사가 만나는 소통의 장이기도 하다. ‘역사적’이라면 굉장히 거대한 맥락으로 다가오지만, 다름 아닌 작고 사소한 개인적인 이야기들이 공간의 특수성을 구성하며, 역사적이라는 수식어를 설명할 수 있는 가장 작은 단위이기도 하다. 전시는 굉장히 개인적인 이야기에서 출발한다. 작가가 가장 먼저 집중하는 것은 그가 감각하는 것 자체이다. 그는 보고, 듣고, 만지는 감각 그 자체가 불러일으키는 기분을 탐구하며, 마치 기체처럼 된 감각을 한지 위에 쌓아 기억의 공간을 재구성한다. 재구성된 기억의 공간은 극도로 섬세한 붓질 자체로 재현되기도 하며 입체적 회화로 공간에 우뚝 서기도 한다. 바닥에 물이 조각조각 흐르며, 벽에서 풀들이 솟아난다. 자연에 테두리를 치고 명확한 경계를 넣는 행위, 그리고 바람과 같은 보이지 않는 자연을 초현실적으로 대상화하여 표현하는 행위는 한국화 작가로서 조주현만이 가진 독특한 특색이다. 우리는 나날이 새로운 감각을 경험한다고 하더라도 그것을 새로움 자체로 받아들이는 것이 아니라 어느 순간 우리가 기억하는 감각 안에서 새로운 경험을 어떻게 정의할지, 어디에 분류할지를 사유한다. 반면 반복되는 감각 경험들을 묶어 우리는 어느 순간 완전히 새로운 범주를 창조한다. 그리고 반복 안에서 다양성을 창조해 낸다. 반복 안에서 새로움을 찾는 것이다. 전시는 이러한 개인 내면의 행위 자체를 그의 삶에 가장 가까이 있는 공간 오버제를 통해 주제화하고 있다. 전시장을 들어서면 나무가 돌고 있다. 채색된 스티로폼. 계단을 따라 오르면 나무 뒤에 가려졌던 프로젝터 영상이 눈에 들어온다. 오버제에서 일어난 가상의 사고다. 화면 위의 장식을 지나 문을 따라 큰 홀 안으로 들어오자마자 정면에 보이는 것은 높게 걸린 하늘이다. 동시에 미스터리한 사운드가 홀 전체를 떠돌아다닌다. 이곳에서 우리는 밝은 하늘과 노을을 정면으로 마주한다. 눈을 돌려 오른편 벽에는 스투코들이 하늘과 땅의 경계를 입고 있다. 단절과 연속이다. 전시장을 들어섰을 때 우리는 길을 잃은 느낌을 받는다. 여러 개의 작은 방으로 이루어져 있는 것이 아닌, 혹은 복도를 따라 작품이 진열되어 있는 것이 아닌 커다란 정사각형의 방에 하나의 세계가 구성되어 있다. 여기서 우리는 모든 사유를 멈추고 감각화된 기체의 기억을 그대로 감각한다. 그렇게 작가의 재현을 통해 우리만의 기억을, 공간을, 감각을 잃어버림 그 자체로 두고 관조하는 순간을 경험하게 된다. 2. „사유를 놓아 보는 건 어때요?“ 앞서 언급한 것처럼 빌라 하이케는 베를린 역사의 중요한 일부로서 근래 들어 독일 공영방송 Rbb에 소개된 적이 있었다. 2차 세계대전 직후에 태어난 세대인 것처럼 보이던 한 관람객과의 일화를 간단히 언급하고자 한다. 그는 방송을 통해 이 공간에서 전시가 열리고 있다는 소식을 접했다고 했다. 그는 한국인 작가의 전시가 맞는지, 여기 이 지역이 유대인 지역이라는 것, 그리고 문화재로 보존되어 있는 공간이라는 것을 아는지, 그런데 이 공간에서 한국인 작가의 전시가 열리고 있는 이유는 무엇인지 궁금해했다. 그는 유대인과 기독교인의 갈등을 언급하면서 이 지역이 유대인 지역이라는 말을 하고 이 전시는 필시 이 지역의 문화에 관련된 것이 아닐까 하는 기대를 하며 방문한 것이라고 한다. 그런데 그는 여기서 베를린도 유럽의 문화도 아닌 한국화를 만났다. 그는 이 작업이 우리에게 왜 필요했냐는 것이다. 그리스식의 기둥과 스투코들은 유럽의 고유한 문화인데 그것을 한국으로 가지고 가서 소개하거나 선보이려 하는 것이 아니냐는 것이다. 이미 우리에게 유럽의 문화는 직접 가지고 가서 선보이거나 새로이 소개해야 할 선진 문물이 아니다. 우리가 살고 있는 공간이 다름 아닌 이곳 베를린이며, 그 이유는 다양하다. 우리에게 주어진 공간에서 우리가 느끼고 감각하는 것들을 우리가 할 수 있는 방식으로 재현한 것이다. 그런데 그러한 수고에는 필시 그 재현 활동 자체로서만이 합리화 될 수 없는 어떤 이면의 목표가 있지 않겠느냐는 것이 그의 마지막 질문이었다. 이곳이 다름 아닌 작가의 삶의 공간이며, 공간과 삶의 순수한 연관성을 찾는 작업이 다름 아닌 작가의 과제였던 것이다. 따라서 전시가 이 건물과의 접점을 지니고 있으면서도 건물 자체에 관한 것일 수만은 없는 것이다. 그렇다면 우리의 이러한 활동이, 작가의 작품이 이 공간을 흐르면서 재창조해내는 가치는 무엇이고, 이러한 관람객들에게 어떤 방식으로 말을 걸고 있는 것인가? 한국인과 독일인의 정치적인 이해관계도, 문화적인 상관성으로도 설명될 수 없는 지금 여기는, 이 공간은, 또 작가는 어떤 이야기를 꼭 해야만 했을까? 3. 기억을 감각하기 위하여 전시장에 들어선 우리는 공간을 사유한다. 존재를 정의하기 위함이다. 그러나 개인적 공간으로서 지금의 여기가 우리의 존재 전체를 관통하는 유일한 단서는 아니다. 자신이 머무르고 있는 마치 굉장히 개인적인 것 같은 작은 공간조차도 사회적이고 역사적인 개별 요소들 그리고 자연적 환경이 결합되어 특유의 분위기와 맥락을 갖는다. 개인이 존재하는 공간이 단지 개인의 것이 될 수 없다는 사실이 명확해지는 과정, 즉 개인적인 것의 탈개인화와 그리고 공동화 과정은 개별 존재들이 타인과 끊임없이 소통하는 한 필연적이다. 우리는 지극히 개인적이지만 늘 소통하기를 욕망한다. 이 또한 마찬가지로 존재를 정의하기 위함이다. 자신이 자신에게 부여하는 가치 그 이상을 원한다. 자신만이 자신을 정의할 수 있는 근거가 될 수는 없는 것이다. 우리는 &lt;나의 친애하는 오버제&gt;를 본다. 모든 사유의 과정과 사유를 거친 소통의 과정 이전에 우리를 가장 먼저 자극하는 것은 감각함 그 자체이다. 우리는 감각하고 자극을 받아 사유하기 시작한다. 감각 이전에는 사유가 불가능하다. 자신이 기억하고 감각했던 것을 다시 붙잡는 과정은 사유를 향한 첫 번째 단계이다. 사유를 향한 모든 기억의 재감각화, 그것이 작가의 작업에서 읽을 수 있는 가장 중요한 맥락인 것이다. 이 전시장은 이렇게 사람과 사람의 각기 다른 욕망을 감각적인 경험을 통해 교류하는 장소이자, 자신만의 욕망을 실현하는 장소이기도 하다. 우리는 살아가고 있다. 그리고 변화하고 있다. 감각하고 있다. 감각은 기억으로 남고 작가는 다시 기억을 감각화한다. 감각화된 기억 즉 재현을 경험하면서 우리는 소통에 대한 인간의 욕망을 확인한다. 각기 다른 주체가 같은 시간에 경험했던 서로 다른 공간성들에 대해 이야기 하고 소통하며, 공감한다. 공감은 단순한 이해의 차원을 넘어서 다름을 사유하는 원동력이 된다. 이 모든 과정들은 가장 단순한 그리고 가장 원초적인 감각함에서 시작한다. 우리가 있는 이 장소, 빌라 하이케의 &lt;기억; 오버제&gt;에서 꼭 해야만 하는 이야기들이 각자에게 있을 것이다. 그것을 우리는 상황에 따라 잊고 넘기기도 하고 참기도 하며 그냥 흘려 보내기도 한다. 다시 한번 돌아보게 되는 기억들, 강렬함이 있다. 아니면 반복되는 일상을 변주하고 싶은 욕망도 우리는 부정할 수 없다. 코로나19로 방에 갇힌 우리는 매일 반복적인 일상을 살아간다. 자기와 타자가 경험하는 대상이 같다고 하더라도 그것이 각자에게 의미하는 바는 다르다. 가장 어두운 동베를린의 겨울 거리에서 우리는 우연히 빌라 하이케의 큰 창을 통해 그만의 화려한 색채와 리듬으로 재현된 기억의 감각들을 마주치게 된다. ● 비평가 소개 임 보 라 홍익대학교 미학과에서 발터 벤야민과 독일 낭만주의를 연구했고, 베를린 자유대 철학과에서 환상과 숭고 그리고 감정과 행위를 주제로 연구를 이어가고 있다. 독일 베를린에서 번역가이자 프리렌서 큐레이터, 그리고 비평가로서 활동중이다. ● 전시 정보 전시 제목 : 기억; 오버제 (Obersee); Memories; Obersee (작가: 조주현 개인전) 전시 장소: Villa Heike ( Freienwalder Straße 17, 13055 Berlin, Germany) 전시 오프닝: 2021년 12월 16일 &nbsp; https://jo-joo.com/2018-Flat-digital Mon, 30 Nov 2020 20:39:10 +0000 jo-joo.com https://jo-joo.com/2018-Flat-digital 2018.11.05-2018.12.01Flat digital ( 한국어 ) 인터넷과디지털 매체는 반복적이고 지속적인 시각적 폭로에 익숙해진 우리의 살랑한 마음을 사로잡고 그 시각적 기대에 부합하기 위해 매일매일 매혹적인 이미지 제품을 생산해낸다. 문제다.. 이는 결국 세상에서 일어나는 실제 사건들의 심각성을 묽게 만들고 사람들이 비극적인 상황에 연민의 감정을 가지는 것을 억압한다. 처음엔 입체적이고 얼기설기 했던 다양한 감정과 여러 각도의 이야기 덩어리 덩어리들이 디지털 매체의 거름망을 거치면 어찌나 그렇게 감정적으로 납작하고 평면인 이미지로 바뀌는지... 우리의 얄팍한 욕망에 딱 부합하는 사고 팔기 좋은 납작한 시각 제품으로 재탄생 한다. 작업은 대체로 우리가 지난한 일상에서 자주 경험하지 못하는 평면 이미지들을 디지털 아카이브(구글, 네이버, 페이스북, 인스타그램 등)에서 채집하는걸로 시작된다. 네이버 실시간 검색어에 오른 살인 수법이 그렇게도 악랄하다는 범죄자가 잡혀가는 모습, 아침에 본 중앙일보 전면에 크게 올라온 제천의 한 스포츠클럽이 화염에 휩싸여 시뻘겋게 타오르는 이미지, 페이스북 피드에 실시간으로 올라온 공동경비구역에서 북한군 한명이 차를 세워두고 남한쪽으로 뛰고있는 cctv 영상 자료 등은 좋은 영감이 된다. 수집된 이미지 자료와 사람들의 댓글, 실시간 검색어 추이 등을 보며 사람들이 이미지 자극에 어떻게 반응하는지, 실재 입체적인 사건과 평면의 디지털 자료를 통해 전해져오는 자극을과 이를 받아들이는 사람들 사이의 간극은 얼마나 큰지 생각해본다. 그 후, 디지털 매체를 떠돌아 다니던 이미지들의 거칠고 험상궃은 느낌을 없애기위해 부정적인 시각적 요소들을 화려한 색과 만화적인 표현으로 지우고 가려 기분좋은 이미지로 변형시킨다. 이는 우리 대중이 인터넷과 디지털 미디어가 매개해주는 이미지들에 어떻게 받아들이고 대처하는지 역설적으로 묘사하고 극대화시키려는 시도이다. ‘어떻게 하면 이 실재하는 재난과 사건들의 복잡다난함을 더, 더, 더 극적으로 역설할까, 그 역설된 이미지들은 어떤 방식으로 감정적으로 평면이게 보여질까, 재난이나 사건의 비극성이 시각적으로 매력적이면 이미지에 대한 관람자의 감정적 연결이 실재로 옅어질까?’ 하는 고민을 한다. (조주현) ( English ) The media produce and commercialize more and more fascinating images to satisfy the needs of the dulled public with the quantitative repetition of stimulation. I have made it my task is to try to understand how the stimulation of mass media images distracts people from real content and makes it harder for them to sympathize with the pain of others, whilst attempting to interpret how the public responds to them, and using my chosen medium to remove and hide negative elements to expose the viewer to what is happening. My works of art reforms the content from the real cruelty of the media displayed, and through this, it paradoxically maximizes the position the media portrays for the public consuming the image. My works are an exploration of the extremes that the modern deluge of media can have as an effect on the audience. It creates a delusional state where those experiencing the images or media that they are given become dispassionate about its content. This then creates the role of the media as the spectacle peddler and the audience as a consumer of this. To be exposed to the tragedies of the world but without emotional traction with what is taking place becomes the experience average consumer. These issues are expressed in the work by taking modern media images surrounding major world events, such as the shooting of ICBMs by North Korea, and turning them into visually appealing cartoon paintings. They become visually appealing spectacles of real world disasters that the media has continuously exposed to the public. There is the idea that this disaster porn becomes the normal way to deal with the events that unfold in the worldI began to think that people require spectacle, they actively seek it out and need it. The real content inside the image doesn’t matter, they seek it to be entertained by the spectacle. From this I developed the view of what the extreme of this would look like. Where would the end for this be? How could it look taking this idea to extreme? Is there a point when you try to make a disaster visually appealing that it breaks experience? When an audience experiences this I want to explore what their reaction will be and to see if they realise what is happening in front of them. To see how they will respond to images they have likely seen before on news channels and websites, but presented as something entirely new. I think that there needs to be questions asked about how the public experiences media and how it relates to events that are taking place. We need to explore the questions about the need people have to be brought into the 24-hour news cycle and lurch from one catastrophic event to the next. (JUHEON CHO) 1. I also tried to deconstruct the experiences and stories of the day to try and highlight the methods that the media use. From colours and sensational images to their disregard for the feelings of the people involved and instead of turning it into another story to follow. Some of the iconic images that are presented are part of much bigger stories and impacts that the population don’t follow through on. The defection of a North Korean soldier under fire from his previous comrades in arms is a prime example. Today people remember the event as it happened but their understanding is 2 dimensional, they recall the image and the details but not the rest of the story. The sensation of BTS given attention whilst fires ravaged the homes of thousands. The event is remembered, the meaning forgotten and the emotional connection muted and subdued as a survival mechanism on how to deal with all the tragedy we face. Taken a step further, the depictions can be turned into backdrops for a home and the tragedy of it diminished into nothingness through repetition.&nbsp; (한국어) 사진과 영상 그리고 이를 전달하는 매체들의 발달로 우리는 실시간으로 지구 곳곳의 대형 사건, 사고, 재난, 전쟁, 테러 현장의 이미지를 실시간으로 경험한다. 이제는 각종 언론 매체들에서 파견한 보도 기자들 뿐 만 아니라 소셜네트워킹 미디어 유저들까지 사건 보도에 가세 해 우리에게 더욱 더 생생한 날것의 이미지들을 스크린에 배포한다. ...아침에 침대에서 일어나면서 동시에 핸드폰을 켜 이 앱 저 앱(네이버, 가디언, 싸구려 메트로 신문, 페이스북) 을 돌아다니면서 뉴스를 확인한다. 모든게 바쁘게 돌아가는 세상이니 보통은 기사 자체를 읽기 전에 사건의 보도 이미지나 영상부터 확인해서 개요를 파악한다.&nbsp; 화끈한 대형 사건 사고가 있는 날에는 내 답답하고 지루한 일 상에 뭔지 모를 활기가 생긴다. 출근길에 다시 한번 더, 커피를 주문하고 기다리는 동안 한 번 더, 엘리베이터를 기다리며 한 번 더, 일 하면서는 컴퓨터 스크린에 작업 창과 뉴스 창을 동시에 띄워 놓고 어디 자극적인 영상이나 사진이 더 없는지 실시간으로 확인을 한다… &nbsp;현대인은 24시간 365일 미디어가 쉬지 않고 쏟아내는 보도 이미지들을 경험한다. 미디어는 자극의 양적 반복으로 무뎌진 대중들의 욕구를 충족시키기 위해 더욱더 매혹적인 이미지를 생산하고 상품화 한다. 이는, 사건들 자체의 심각함을 희석 시키고 처참한 비극의 상황에 우리가 공감 할 수 있는 능력을 점점 더 퇴보시킨다. 심지어 우리는 보도 이미지 속의 로맨틱한 네러티브와 웅장하고 숭고미 넘치는 잔혹한 이미지들의 포르노그래피에 매료 되고 그 자극에 중독 된다. 작업은 인터넷 매체에서 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 잔혹하거나 웅장한, 우리가 일상에서 쉽게 겪어보지 못하는 다양 한 시각적 스펙타클이 등장 하는 신문이나 디지털 형식의 보도 자료들을 수집하는 것으로 시작한다. 그리고 매스미디어 이미지의 자극 이 어떻게 사람들을 실재 콘텐츠에서 멀어지게 하고 타인의 고통에 공감하기 힘들게 만드는지, 대중은 이에 어떻게 반응 하는지 해석을 시도하고, 귀여운 카툰의 언어와 화려한 색, 장식적인 형식과 같은 장치들을 이용하여 부정적인 요소들을 제거하고 가린다. 이렇게 각색된 작업은 실재의 참혹함과는 다른 무언가가 되고 이 파라독스를 통해 스크린 뒤의 방관자의 시점에서 이미지를 소비하는 대중의 위치를 역설적으로 극대화 하고 경각심을 불러 일으키고자 한다. 디지털 이미지들의 스펙타클한 자극과 방관자 입장에서의 대중의 반응에 대한 나의 시선은 디지털 게임에서 작은 동양인 어린이가 오염된 풍경에서 구름을 타고 뛰놀며 방사능 아이콘을 먹어 점수를 올리는 것으로 대변된다. 디지털 게임이 즉각적인 피드백으로 플레이어들을 게임 속으로 매료시키는 것처럼 스크린 터치 몇 번에 끝도 없이 쏟아지는 미디어의 스펙타클 속으로 빠져드는 우리들에 대한 해석이다. 2016년부터 제작해온 파노라마 페인팅 작업은 현재 21미터까지 확장되었고 종이 스크롤로 제작되어 다양한 공간에 설치 될 수 있도록 제작되었다.&nbsp; 이번 전시에서는 대형 파노라마 스크롤과 그네도 함께 설치되어 관람객들이 천진난만한 아이처럼 그네를 타고 재난 이미지의 파노라마 작업 앞에서 셀프 카메라를 찍을 수 있도록 유도한다. &nbsp;2016년도부터 현재까지 걸출한 사건 사고 때마다 인터넷 뉴스 보도자료에서 색을 추출해 수집한 색차트 작업은 페인트 상점에서 여러 가지 색들에 로맨틱한 이름을 붙여 상품화시키는 것에서 아이디어를 얻어 수집한 색에 사건과 관련된 이름을 지어 전시하고, 관람객이 이 색과 색의 번호와 이름이 프린트된 스케치북을 전시에서 가져갈 수 있게 한다.&nbsp; 관람객이 이 스케치북을 가져가 사용하는 동안 포스터와 같은 선전물로 이용되어 전시장 밖의 대중에게도 메세지를 전달한다.&nbsp;2017년 한국시간 6월 4일 저녁 런던 브릿지에서 시민들을 대상으로 일어난 테러 현장에 있었던 친구들의 그룹채팅 내용을 이용한 도큐멘트 작업은 실제상황을 생생하게 가 경험 하는 것과 디지털 보도를 통해 전달받는 것 사이에 놓였던 작가의 경험을 이야기한다.&nbsp; 인터넷에 떠돌아다니는 보도자료들과 스펙타클 이미지-북한의ICBM발사 성공, 그렌펠 타워 화재, 고리원자력발전소 폐쇄, 후쿠시마 원전 환경 오염, 시리아 난민 해상 탈출-를 카툰의 언어로 재해석하는 평면작업도 이번 개인전에 다수 전시된다. 하이퍼 자본주의 사회에서 상품화되는 사건사고 이미지에 대한 작업으로 원자력과 핵에 관한 이미지로 패턴을 만들어 인테리어 벽지로 사용할 수 있도록 제작하였다. 벽지 작업은 전시장에 인테리어 How logos and iconography can be side by side with warnings and fears. How a nuclear warning surrounded by other depictions should diffuse it into something desirable instead of something that invokes fear.&nbsp; The exhibition creating a space of warnings that were attractive and distracting from the message formed a foundation for some of the themes I have developed over the years. Mass Media has become a type of collage. Too many channels have surfaced and people tend to build their own collage that leads them through numerous other channels. The Image-flooded metropolitan area are filled with spectacles has raised up the general populations expectations to its maximum. The magnificence, lavish colours and provocative narratives in the Commercials, News photos in the streets and online always present to us with shocking images with more stimulus than before. Therefore, the public lives in an oblivion built around them that fools them into the world inside the shiny neon and images in the internet and away from the reality they actually live in. Showing imaginary landscapes and elements that were drawn from real-world events such as the rise of sinkholes or volcanic eruptions that were taking place at the time drew attention to the natural disasters that we face as well as those that are caused by man-made events such as the atomic bomb. The precipice of humanity is dangling on the edges of destruction every day, yet packaged and presented in a way that is appealing suppresses the impact and connection people have with them. This distraction is the start of the walk that humanity makes towards its own end as it fails to look at these problems and instead choosing to be distracted.&nbsp; The people of modern, consumer-capitalist society that have gave up the innate identity and passively accepted the distorted desire that exists all around them in all forms including TV, Media, Internet. These medium of mass communication has now occupied people’s minds with relentless exposures and the afterimage of these media linger on in their minds. While it seems that the overflow of these images and information in our society continue to violently strike our minds, yet the people living in it seem to have adapted to living in such a flood and have forgotten to think beyond the boundaries of the media they are exposed to.I wish to refresh the fact the Mass media has become the ruling party in our minds with forced images, and the entailed false desires and orders that have become the central authority that oversees the distorted hierarchy in which the microscopic authority that lies all around the lives of the public and cultivates such images as the ruling image. Moreover, what’s left of such process are false, imaginary images that transcends the reality, leaving the general population with less judgement and more dependence upon the mass media. So my ultimate aim is to remind us all that the people are being intoxicated with too much media, images, and texts and are being buried under the superficial surface filled with images. *Exhibition
